This 'Lone Butte' rises by itself in an area between Fairview and Woodward Oklahoma. These red gypsum buttes.....and there are many, rise above the ground displaying their sparkling gems of mica and gypsum in the red earth. The grayish-white crown, caps off the buttes. The sparling glass-like fragments in the sunlight prompted the surveyors in the 1800's to name them the 'Glass Mountains', but the map makers misread their writing and so have since been known as the 'Gloss Mountains'. No matter what you call them, they are beautiful anytime of the year, but especially when the sun is showing their splendor.
